Miss Ngaire Heads, Awarua, left yesterday to further her studies at the Otago University. Mrs P. Feltham, Albert street, has returned from a visit to Mrs W. L. Cunningham, Castle Downs. Mr and Mrs J. Moore, Wellington, are the guests of their daughter, Mrs Ivon Wilson, Duke street. Miss Jean Bell, Elies road, is spending the week-end as the guest of Miss C. McKerchar, The Grove, Woodlands. Mr and Mrs Norman Gibson, Dobson, West Coast, are the guests of Mr and Mrs Norman Gibson, sen., Wilton street. Miss Frances Remnant, W.A.A.F., Harewood, arrives today to spend a week’s leave with her parents at Lochiel. Mrs Leicester Webb, who has been the guest of Mrs W. E. Hunt, Waitoru Downs, yesterday for Timaru and Christchurch. Miss May Winter, W.A.A.F., Harewood, is spending week-end leave with her parents, Mr and Mrs R. Winter, Chapman street. Mrs A. Chisholm and her small son Alasdair, Strathallan, Otautau, who have been staying with Mrs Rodan Thomson, Dalrymple street, returned home yesterday. Miss Marjory Davis, Lowe street, and Miss Marjorie Jones, Alice street, members of the W.A.A.F., Wigram, have been promoted to the rank of W.A.I. They are the first Invercargill girls to receive promotion. The two-day conference of the National Council of Women, which was to have been held on March 12 and 14 at Wellington in place of the full conference at Wanganui, has now been postponed, according to a telegram received from Mrs J. Hargest, acting president of the Invercargill branch. There were 230 present at a social held in St. John’s hall yesterday afternoon for next of kin of prisoners of war and missing men. Mesdames K. H. Smythe, N. A. Brodrick and F. G. HallJones received the guests. Mrs HallJones welcomed those present and read some interesting extracts from letters received from prisoners of war in various camps. Mrs Stanley Brown read paragraphs from letters from her son, Sergeant Rutherford Brown, and introduced Mrs H. G. Hinton, mother of Sergeant J. D. Hinton, V.C., who spoke a few words. Afternoon tea was served by 10 V.A.’s in uniform and songs were sung by Miss Grace Hunter. Mrs T. Wray Wilson played several pianoforte solos. The Air Force Relations Committee wishes to acknowledge garments handed in to the depot by the following knitters:—Mesdames G. F. Burgess, Aitchison, A. C. Ford, W. A. H. Oliver, T. S. Royds, A. M. Macdonald, F. Loughnan, D. Craig, E. Russell, Warburton, Scott, J. Mallard, J. Taylor, O. F. Bath, J. T. Bath; Misses N. Rodger, L. Henderson, Nurse, McKay (Wyndham), G. Lewis, J. Bissett, and Technical College girls. The committee wishes to acknowledge with thanks a donation of £5 from Mrs A. W. Jones. The depot in J. E. Watson’s buildings is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2.30 to 5 p.m. and knitters are invited to call to collect wool for knitting for the R.N.Z.A.F.

The South Invercargill Women’s Patriotic Committee will be interested in an extract from a letter written by Private Pat Polson, formerly of Invercargill, to some friends: "At present I am in hospital, nursing a broken wrist which I received while playing football for the battalion,” he says. “Yesterday a counterpane, which was done by the South Invercargill Women’s Patriotic Committee, was brought into this ward and as I was from Invercargill it was placed on my bed and looks very well. Southland people always seem to be on top. I am going to take a photo of it which I will send on to you. Would you please convey my thanks to the South Invercargill Patriotic Committee for this masterpiece.” PATRIOTIC NOTES RECORD NUMBER OF PARCELS The South Invercargill B Committee, which was on duty at the depot, packed 500 parcels during the week—a record so far. SUB-COMMITTEE NOTES Hawthorndale.—The monthly collection for February totalled £6. Avenal-Northend. —This committee will hold its monthly meeting at the home of Mrs John Macdonald, Avenal street, on Wednesday, at 2 p.m. The monthly house-to-house collection is still in progress. Waikiwi.—This committee will meet at the home of Mrs .R. Action, Price street, on Tuesday, at 7.30 p.m. East Invercargill.—The following donations are acknowledged witlf thanks: Mrs Dunlop, £3; Mrs King, 12/-; Mrs Lindsay, £l, and Mrs Henderson 8/-. South Invercargill B.—The monthly collection is still in progress. This committee has been on duty at the depot during the

past week. Thanks are due to those who made garments for the Lady. Galway Guild and also the knitters of the following: One pair of sea boot stockings, eight pairs of mittens, four scarves, one pair of socks, and one balaclava. Georgetown.—The sewing bee is busily engaged making boys’ shirts for the Lady Galway Guild. During February three dozen scarves have been completed. North Invercargill.—Relations of men serving in the fighting forces are cordially invited to a social afternoon in the Sunday school hall on Monday at 2.30 p.m. Gladstone.—The year’s house-to-house collections, 1940-41, totalled £358/18/1. This committee will have its shop day in the dug-out on Friday, March 13. The monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 10, at 2 p.m., at the home of Mrs L. C. Smith, Duke street. The Lady Galway Guild sewing bee will meet on Friday next as usual. Central.—Sub-committee: Anyone willing to knit comforts is asked to ring 2126 for supplies of wool. South Invercargill B.—Word has been received that the quilt made by this committee is now on the bed of a Southland soldier in a hospital in Egypt.. AUXILIARY NOTES Cycle Corps.—Weather permitting an outing will be held today, leaving the Crescent at 1.15 p.m. Canleen Group.—Weather permitting, Area No. 3 will operate the field kitchen in Queen’s Park today. Military Drill.—lf fine, military drill will be held in Queen’s Park on Tuesday, at 7 p.m. If wet at H. & H. Motors, the garage, corner of Don and Kelvin streets at 7 p.m. Transport Group.—Members of the transport section who are available for full-time duty are asked to ring either Mrs Uttley (1623), or Miss Basstian (590).
