EARLY ATTACK EXPECTED

JAPANESE MENACE TO JAVA INCREASED AIR ACTIVITY (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) BANDOENG, Feb. 27. The attack on Java has begun. Both the air and naval arms are striking hard blows. The bombing of Java airfields has reached an intensity which suggests that attempts at landing will not be long delayed. Some quarters forecast an attempt at landing within three days; others believe the Japanese require three weeks to complete their preparations. The opinion is expressed that the invasion may take the following form:— (1) An attempt to land on the north shore of Central Java, possibly at Samarang, which was bombed today. (2) Simultaneous landings in West Java by forces from South Sumatra, with the object of capturing the East Indies capital. (3) A landing in East Java by forces from Bali to attack the chief East Indies naval base of Sourabaya.
