BOXING TOURNAMENT AT BURNHAM
SOUTHLAND MEN DO WELL At a boxing tournament at the Burnham Military Camp' this week, members of the Ist Southland Regiment were well represented. A lightweight bout between Aircraftman Thomas and Private A. H. Jones (Ist Southland) provided a close contest. A feature of the bout was the brisk toe-to-toe exchanges. Both are very good boxers and each took heavy punishment, Jones scoring with a hard right to the jaw to win by a knockout in the last round. The bouts in which members of the -st Southland Regiment took part resulted:— Bantam-weight—Pte. C. J. Hunt (Ist Southland) beat Cpl. Wildermath (R.N.Z. A.F.) on points. Featherweight—Gnr. Mosley (N.Z.A.) beat Pte. Attley (Ist Southland) on points. Lightweight—Pte. A. H. Jones (Ist Southland) knocked out A/C Thomas (R.N.Z.A.F.) in the third round. Welterweight— Pte. Gibson (Ist Southland) beat Gnr. Kett (N.Z.A.) on a technical knock-out in the third round. Heavyweight—Spr. D. Wakelin (N.Z.E.) beat Cpl. C. Overton (Ist Southland) on a technical knock-out in the third round. Major J. D. Hutchison and Lieutenant E. C. Tapley were the referees.
