DIVEBOMBERS SHOT DOWN INTO SEA

(8.0.W.) RUGBY, Feburary 4. An Admiralty communique states: Two Junkers 88 dive-bombers were shot down into the sea by gunfire. One aircraft attempted to attack a convoy. It was damaged by tracer bullets and transferred its attack to another ship which put up a heavy barrage. The Junkers 88 was seen to swerve and its bombs fell harmlessly into the sea. A few moments later the aircraft crashed in the middle of the convoy, its port wingtip hitting the water and slamming the bomber on its back. No casualties or damage were suffered by ships or the escort.

The other Junkers 88 was shot down by the mine-sweeper Britomart. The aircraft attacked the mine-sweeper from a low level, but was hit by antiaircraft fire and crashed into the sea in flames. One rating was killed and one wounded. The ship suffered superficial damage.
