HOSTILE CROWD BOOS POLICE
Arrest Of Seamen In Auckland
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 27. An excited crowd of several hundred persons watched a band of police arrest six men in Little Queen street shortly after six o’clock tonight. So threatening did the demeanour of the crowd become that reinforcements were sent down from the Central Police Station. When a constable attempted to arrest two seamen, one of the men resisted violently. Two sergeants and three more constables arrived on the scene and were steadily booed by the crowd. While the police awaited the arrival of a van to take the seamen to the station the crowd continued to demonstrate and four more men were arrested. The police unsuccessfully sought for a fifth man in the crowd. A number of constables, some in civilian clothes, arrived in a police van and stayed in the vicinity after its departure with the arrested men. Several persons who had assisted the police were threatened by other members of the crowd.
