(United Press .Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Received 11.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 27. A communique issued in Melbourne today stated that Royal Australian Air Force planes carried out a bombing raid on Japanese ships in Rabaul Harbour, New Britain, last night. Three Japanese transports were hit and damaged. One ship was observed to be burning furiously; another was ablaze and a third is known to have been hit. All the aircraft returned to their base. “The reported occupation by the Japanese of Kieta in the Solomon Islands is now regarded as incorrect,” said the Army Minister, Mr F. M. Communication with the Bulolo goldfields in New Guinea was re-established yesterday.

The militia and Australian infantry on New Britain Island are believed to be holding out.' Japanese reconnaissance was continued today in the New Guinea and the Solomon Islands areas. There were no major developments.
