TWO TONE HORNS FOR FIRE ENGINES

BELLS INSUFFICIENTLY AUDIBLE

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, January 27. Superintendent Hume, of the Lower Hutt Fire Brigade, has proposed twotone alternate sounding horns, instead of bells to replace the siren on fire engines. Such horns are available and are believed to be more audible than bells in traffic. Bells have proved insufficiently audible and engine speeds have been reduced, giving fires more time to get a hold. There is no conflict with the sound of sirens, these twotone horns being quite distinctive.
