Chaplain Captain W. H. Greenslade, minister of Central Methodist Church, Invercargill, has been granted .indefinite leave of absence. The officials of the church propose to request the New Zealand Methodist Conference, which sits in Wellington next month, to appoint a minister to superintend the circuit temporarily. Chaplain Captain Greenslade is attached to the Otago Regiment in mobilization camp.
Mr L. G. Wood, general manager of Scoullar and Chisholm, Ltd., is at present on a Short visit to Invercargill. The chairman of the Invercargill Fire Board (Mr W. G. Tait) and Mr R. R. Binney, a member of the board, have been appointed to represent the Invercargill Fire Board at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Fire Boards’ Association in Wellington on February 3. Mr G. S. Nicol has resigned his position as secretary of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, to which he was appointed in 1932. Lieutenant A. K. Chirnside, New Zealand Dental Corps, has been promoted to the rank of captain. A former New Zealand representative cricketer and the managing-direc-tor of a well-known South Island passenger transport firm, Mr J. Newman, has been appointed to the New Zealand Army Temporary. Staff and granted the rank of captain. He has been appointed adjutant of Nos. 20 and 21 Companies (Nelson and Westland) Lines of Communication (Mechanical Transport) Units, Home Guard. Captain Newman has played Rugby for Nelson and cricket for Canterbury, Wellington and New Zealand, representing the Dominion against South Africa in 1932 and England in 1933 as a left-hand slow-medium bowler.
