The engagement is announced of Jessie Thomson, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs L. S. Edmond, Ohai, and Herbert Gow, younger son of Mr and Mrs D. Gardiner, Ohai.

Mr and Mrs J. Hogg, Queenstown, are visiting Dunedin. Miss Thyra C. Tocker, street, is spending a holiday at Stewart Island.

Miss Linda Cooper, who has been visiting friends in Invercargill, has returned home to Wellington. Mrs Noel Simpson, Dunedin, is visiting Invercargill as the guest of Miss J. Harvey, Ritchie street. Miss Joan Nelson, Gala street, left yesterday to spend the New Year nollw days at the Rocks, Riverton. * Miss Cardia Russell, Park street, is spending a short holiday at Stewart Island with her parents, Mr and Mrs A. S. Russell.

Mrs James Watt (formerly Miss Bertha Holz), of Palmerston North, is at present spending a holiday with her sister, Mrs E. Shirley, 110 Nith street. Miss N. North, supervisor of the telephone exchange at Stratford, has been transferred to the position, of assistant supervisor at Invercargill in place of Miss V. M. Mehaffey, who retired a short time ago.

The first voluntary helper. at the New Zealand Forces Club in. Cairo, was Mrs Blackford, a New Zealander, bom in Christchurch. She is the wife of an English major. Mrs Blackford worked at the club until the arrival of Mrs Freyberg, when she joined Mrs Freyberg’s band of voluntary helpers. Mrs Blackford continues to give her whole time to the club and to Red Cross work.

Hilda Wilson and Elaine Sullivan held a garden bazaar at the former’s home 304 Tay street, the proceeds, which amounted to £l/7/-, going to the Red Cross funds. The children who helped to make the sale a success were ..Diana Hicks, Betty Agnew, Joan Swhan, Loma Gilmour, Rae Mathieson, Janice Mathieson, Marina Sullivan and Elsa Wilson. A box of chocolates was donated by Mrs MacDougall and won by Mr Sullivan.
