WYNDHAM

BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ CLUBS

The judging of entries of stock in the Wyndham group of the Southland Boys’ and Girls’ Club took place recently. The judge was Mr Carnegie Gardiner, Southland president of the club, and accompanying him was Mr K. I. Robertson, the Southland Education Board’s agricultural organizer. The Wyndham group comprises the schools of Edendale, Seaward Downs, Menzies Ferry, Mataura Island, Glenham, Wyndham South, Wyndham, Mimihau, Redan, Mokoreta and Tuturau, and at Wyndham on Tuesday entries of lambs, calves and ponies from the Menzies Ferry and Wyndham schools were judged. At Wyndham opportunity was taken to give the scholars some instruction in the art of judging stock. After Mr Gardiner had made his decision he demonstrated the main points of a Jersey calf and a pony. The rector, Mr A. N. Macdonald, thanked him for his interesting and instructive remarks.

Information about the progress of the club was given by Mr Macdonald, who said it was working on an irregular basis in that nd committee has been formed, with the exception that he was the secretary. It was hoped that in the new year a committee representative of the schools concerned in the group ’could be elected, and that each school’s activities would be governed by the teacher concerned and a member of the committee as supervisor.

Mr Macdonald said that it was probable that next year a field day, at which the various winners would be exhibited, would be held after the judging. GLENHAM BOY SCOUTS The Glenham Boy Scouts celebrated their third birthday with a social evening followed by a banquet, at which a number of toasts were honoured. Scout Bruce Hunter was toastmaster. Scouter Stewart, in replying to the Scoutmaster’s toast, asked for the cooperation of the parents and commit-

tee to see that each boy in the troop reached a high standard of efficiency in signalling, carrying messages, first aid, and camp cookery. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs E. Rabbidge for providing the birthday cake, which was decorated with Scout designs. The cake was cut by Mrs A. Ferguson. Items were given by Scouts I. Ferguson, E. Rabbidge, T. Rabbidge, M. Thwaites, J. Wright and R. Bulling.
