WET WEATHER ON BOXING DAY

Large Attendances At Sports Events

Cold and showery weather was experienced for the second day of the Christmas holidays in Southland yesterday. The conditions failed to deter many residents from spending Boxing Day out of doors and there were good attendances at the principal provincial attractions, the Gore Trotting Clubs meeting and the Riverton regatta.. After being deprived of the opportunity to go away for their holidays, many persons were determined that they would have at least one day out of town if it was possible. Showers fell at intervals during the greater part of the day in Invercargill, but the evening was fine. The city streets had an animated appearance in the evening as the crowds returned home. Many persons spent the evening at the pictures. On Christmas Day just more than a quarter of an inch of rain was recorded in the city, bringing the total for the month to 3.30 inches. Temperatures have been low during the greater part of the month and strong winds have caused considerable damage to gardens. Growth has been hindered and comparatively few gardeners were able on Christmas Day to pick well-filled pods of peas for dinner. NORTHERN WEATHER

Southland was not alone in experiencing unseasonable weather for the holidays and reports from northern centres suggest that rain and cold temperatures were general in many parts of New Zealand. Steady, soaking rain set in at Auckland early yesterday morning, causing almost a complete cessation of outdoor sporting activities. With the exception of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting at Ellerslie, all organized fixtures were abandoned, including tennis, cricket and bowling competitions. The beaches were deserted and there was practically no activity on the harbour. In Taranaki and Otago similar conditions were experienced yesterday, but the West Coast reported beautiful weather.
