SPEED LIMIT ON BEACH ROAD

A by-law limiting the speed of traffic on the Oreti Beach road (Dunn’s highway) to 30 miles an hour was confirmed by the Southland County Council yesterday. The by-law also obliges cyclists to use the cycle track and not the road and prohibits the driving of any vehicle other than a cycle or the riding of a horse along the cycle track. The County Clerk (Mr H. C. Gimblett) reported that a deputation from the Automobile Association (Southland) had requested erection of caution signs at the Oreti river bridge and the bridge over the estuary where cyclists had to cross traffic after leaving the cycle track. It was decided to erect the signs as requested.
