COUNTRY ROADS
Sir,—Allow me space in your paper to bring to the Southland County Council’s notice a bad wash-out at the Mataura bridge. The road is in a deplorable state and to get it fixed we have to wait until the local surfaceman is brought from Lumsden. At present he is away up country and goodness knows when he will be brought back to work in his own district. No one would think there is any shortage of petrol to see the county truck running round when it is at this end. Yet the surface man is asked to move to Lumsden and give up his own home here. Only a few years ago two men were employed here and now there is to be none. Wake up ratepayers, I say, and see fair play. RATEPAYER. [This letter was shown to the County Clerk (Mr H. C. Gimblett) who declined to comment.]
