CRICKET
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
meeting
The Eastern Southland Cricket SubAssociation and the Central-Western Cricket Sub-Association have agreed to play a match Eastern v. CentralWestern at Invercargill on Saturday, December 13, providing transport is available, according to information received at a meeting of the management committee of the Southland Cricket Association last night. Mr J. S. Brass presided. It was stated that the match would give the Southland selector, Di G. H. Uttley, a chance of seeing the country players in action. It was decided to ask the sub-association to make the game a whole day match if possible. Both sub-associations were agreeable to send teams in for country day on Saturday, January 10. The Otago Cricket Association advised that the Canterbury representative team would probably be playing Otago at New Year time instead of Christmas and asked if, in this event, Christmas dates would suit Southland. It was decided to accept Christmas dates for the Otago game at Invercargill if it was more convenient to Otago than New Year. The New Zealand Cricket Council advised that at the annual general meeting the following resolution was passed: “That it be a recommendation from this council to the affiliated associations that in view of the importance of maintaining and increasing the number of players actively engaged in the game during the war and afterwards, the associations should organize some planned method of obtaining boys who have been playing cricket at school to play for clubs immediately they leave school.” The council also desired to know what facilities were available at the primary schools in the district. It was reported by Mr G. Agnew that the third grade competition (under 17 years) catered for boys of primary schools and several clubs were taking an interest in the boys from primary schools. It was left to Mr Agnew to draw up a report on the position of cricket in the primary schools and to forward it on to the New Zealand Cricket Council. It also was decided that a copy of the letter be sent to the principal of the Southland Technical College asking for support in the interest of the game in Southland.
The following transfers were granted subject to clearances coming to hand:— E. D. Henderson from Celtic (Gore), to Old Boys; G. L. Dawson, Appleby to Georgetown. A regrade was granted J. Redpath (Old Boys) from senior to Junior A.
It was decided to hold the jubilee functions of the association on the afternoon of Saturday, March 7. It was also decided that a letter of congratulation be sent to C. Johnson of the Invercargill Cricket Club, on securing • a century in a senior match last Saturday. The following is the draw for matches on Saturday:— Seniors.—Bluff v.
