FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY Following are the tennis fixtures for Saturday: A Grade: Winton v. Invercargill, at Winton; Southend v. Tisbury, at Tisbury; Rugby Park v. Waihopai, at Rugby Park; St. Mary’s v. Central, at Central.
B Grade: Southern v. Southend, at Southend; Bluff v. Waikiwi, at Waikiwi; Invercargill v. Waihopai, at Waihopai; Rugby Park v. Kennington, at Kennington; St. Mary’s v. Tisbury, at St. Mary’s. C Grade: Bluff v. Wallacetown (to be completed from the stage where it was interrupted by rain), at Wallacetown. RIVERTON BEATS OHAI The Riverton A grade tennis team travelled to Ohai and beat the home team by 10 sets to six. The results are as follows, Riverton names mentioned first: Women’s Singles: Miss E. More beat Mrs H. Ferguson, 7-6; Miss P. MacDougall beat Miss Munyard, 7-4; Mrs J W. Martin beat Miss C. Grindlay, 7-2; Mrs A. Wilson beat Miss J. Hunter, 7-0. Men’s Singles; D. Corkery lost to R. Bird, 4-9; A. McKenzie beat W. Ferguson, 9-6; E. Bardsley lost to J. Horner, by default; W. Young lost to N. Bird, 5-9 Women’s Doubles: Misses More and MacDougall beat Mrs Ferguson and Miss Grindlay, 7-5; Mesdames Martin and Wilson beat Misses Munyard and Hunter, 7-5. Men’s Doubles: Corkery and McKenzie beat Bird and Ferguson, 9-7; Bardsley and Young lost to Horner and N. Bird, 6-9. , „ Mixed Doubles: Miss More and D. Corkery lost to Miss Munyard and R. Bird, 4-7; Miss MacDougall and A. McKenzie beat Mrs Ferguson and W. Ferguson, 7-2; Mrs Martin and W. Young lost to Miss Grindlay and J. Horner, 3-7; Mrs Wilson and E. Bardsley beat Miss Hunter and N. Bird, 7-1, WAIAU ASSOCIATION Because club competitions in the Waiau Tennis Association have been temporarily abandoned, the Excelsior club held a friendly match on Saturday between teams chosen from members and friends. About 30 took part in combined doubles and singles. On Saturday the annual singles tournament for children attending primary schools in the Waiau district will be held on the Excelsior courts. Entries are expected to be large and there should be some good players in action.
SCHOOL MATCHES AT WINTON
Senior and junior tennis teams of the Southland Girls’ High School travelled to Winton yesterday and _ played matches with the Winton District .High School. The city teams won all games, but the standard of play was good and not as one-sided as the results indicated. The weather was ideal for tennis and the teams spent an enjoyable day on the courts.
