REGATTA SOCIETY
Disappointment that greater enthusiasm was not shown by the majority of business men in Bluff for the annual regatta was expressed by the patron of the Regatta Society (the Hon. T. F. Doyle, M.L.C.) at the annual meeting ■which was held on Saturday night in the Watersiders’ Rooms. Mr J. Williamson presided. There was a good attendance. Mr Doyle emphasized the benefits that accrued to the town from the fixture and asked that greater support be given to it. He wished the society another successful regatta on New Year’s Day. The following office-bearers were elected:—Patron, the Hon. T. F. Doyle, M.L.C.; president, Mr J. Williamson; vice-presidents, Messrs K. McKenzie and O. F. Metzger; executive, Messrs A. E. Budd, C. Hunter, J. Forde, J. Drake," O. Lindqvist, T. Finnerty, L. Mortimer, A. J. Ball and S. G. Mitchell; auditor, Mr R. N. Porter; treasurer, Mr F. W. McDonald. At a subsequent meeting of the executive Mr J. F. Millar was appointed secretary. REGATTA PROGRAMME It was decided that the programme be the same as last year with the addition of a third prize of 10/- for rowing events where there were five or more entries. Advice was received that Mr J. B. Pasco would represent the Southland Rowing Association at the regatta. It was decided to make application to the Bluff Harbour Board for the use of the tug Awarua to run excursion trips as usual. Officials were appointed as follows: Judges, sailing, Captain N. Callan, Messrs C. Hensen and O. F. Metzger; handicappers, Messrs C. Hansen and A. J. Ball; umpires, Captain N. C. Hazard and Captain Walter Clare; umpires, rowing, Messrs O. Lindqvist and C. Hunter; judges, Messrs K. McKenzie and O. Lindqvist; starters, rowing, Messrs J. H. Forde and J. H. Drake; starters, sailing, Messrs A. J. Ball and C. Hansen; sailing committee, Captains Haszard, Callan and Clare and Messrs J. J. Gough, O. F. Metzger and A. J. Ball; rowing postponement committee, starters and Mr Pasco.
Before beginning the business members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the daughter of the club patron, tire Hon. T. F. Doyle, and two members who had died during the year. CARD TOURNAMENT Winners at the weekly card tournament in aid of the Dominican Convent were Mesdames A. Gilson and F. Te Koeti and Messrs E. Murphy and J. McGlone. Mr W. P. Butler was supervisor. NATIONAL SAVINGS The National Savings ball on the post office flag staff did not reach the quarter way mark last week, £26/10/being paid in against the weekly allocation of £133. AWARUA BOATING CLUB The sole selector, Mr C. S. Hunter, has chosen the following crews to represent the Awarua Boating Club at forthcoming regattas: Seniors: J. Cooper (s), N. Johnson, A. Ramsay, S. West (b). Maiden: L. Calder, H. Batt, P. Bulling, T. Craw. Youths: A. Budd, C. West, A. Lowe, G. Lindqvist; R. Dahn, B. Driscoll, N. Dixon, C. Barton; E. Calder, C. Mair, R. Drew, A. Lee; T. Barton, F. Denny, R. Lowe, L. Craw; A. Beaton, D. Thompson, E. Robinson, W. Thomson.
