SUCCESSFUL FIELD NIGHT

ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

BRIGADE

A successful field night was held by the St. John Ambulance Brigade on Saturday. A competition, judged by the district surgeon, Dr H. R. Gibson, was won by the Invercargill Ambulance Division B team. The winning team consisted of Messrs W. A. Jenkins (leader), I. Robertson, J. Brass and R. Atley. The following teams were entered in the competition: Central Nursing Division . (3), Invercargill Ambulance (2), Railway Ambulance (2), Bluff Ambulance Division (1). The Central Nursing B team was second and the A team was third.

The officer in charge of the district, Superintendent W. R. Curwen, expressed his pleasure at seeing so many teams entered. Dr Gibson said that all the work was of a high standard and that of the winning team was outstanding. A feature of the treatment of the "casualty” by some teams was the use of the Thomas splint to deal with a compound fracture of the tibia. Dr Gibson commended this, stating that the splint was designed to give a patient the maximum amount of comfort, and should be more often used. The winning team was to be commended for the way in which it endeavoured, by all the means at its disposal, to make the patient more comfortable. Prizes of small first aid kits given by the Invercargill Ambulance Division were presented to the members of the winning team by Dr Gibson. It was announced that the division was presenting a shield for annual competition.
