LATE NEWS
GERMANY PLANS CONFERENCE (Rec. 1.45 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Nov. 22. President Roosevelt’s secretary, Mr Stephen Early, announced that Mr Roosevelt had received confirmation through diplomatic channels that Germany is planning a Pan-European conference within a month or so. He said advices from Germany indicated that the conference was being arranged because the Nazi losses and the depletion of reserves and materials are weakening the Reich. He added: “The idea is to dress up some high-sounding formula for economic rehabilitation and the restoration of the independence of all European nations, leaving the door open for German violation later, and German control of all these Governments in practice.” He said feelers were being sent to all Axis Powers, some belligerents and some neutrals, but England would be excluded. Mr Early added: “The conference should be discounted in advance by people believing in democracy and opposing military domination not only of Europe, but of the entire world." The Matson Line announced that the Monterey would be taken off the New Zealand-Australian run and the Matsonia off the Hawaiian run during December and January.
