SOUTHLAND CUP TO FIDELIS

SPRING MEETING AT INVERCARGILL

Contrary to general expectations the spring meeting of the Southland Racing Club on Saturday was held in . fairly good conditions. For the first two or three races the track was sticky and slow, but it improved and the second half of the programme was got off on a good, though dead, track. The attendance was a big one, although the gate takings did not come up to those of the corresponding day last season—-the King's Birthday holiday. The gate receipts totalled £560/9/compared with £629/7/6 last year.

The totalizator returns showed an increase. Last year the sum of £20,195 was handled; this year the total was. £20,716/10/-, an increase of £521/10/-. K. E. Wilson, an apprentice jockey, was suspended for one month for careless riding in the Roslyn Trial Handicap, the interference causing Hotch Potch to fall.

Features of the day’s racing were the win of Fidelis in the Southland Cup, the dividend of more than £4O paid by Sunny Dell in the second trot, and the decisive wins of three horses from A. McKay's Riverton stables—Boaform, Sing Sing and Sally Lunn. SOUTHLAND HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP.—Music Hall tried to win the Southland Highweight Handicap from end to end. He got away well and inside the first furlong put a break of several lengths on the field, but he failed to run on and was not in the first six at the finish. Black Bard won well from Prince Ruenalf who raced into the lead with two furlongs to go but failed to hold off Black Bard’s challenge by a neck. Merry Simon, the favourite, was well placed throughout but never got nearer than third—his fourteenth placing in 14 starts—and . Great Swoop had every chance. Georgia was fourth, followed by Great Swoop, Batsham and Music Hall.

WAVERLEY TROT.— The Waverley Trot was run in two divisions. In the first division Fervent, settling down quickly and staying on better than in any of her previous starts, hung on long enough to beat Southern Wrack and Flying Peggy, who filled the places. Dynamic, Southern Wrack and Sovereign Queen were the early leaders, but before the back stretch had been entered Recast had run to th lead and was well clear at the half-mile from Fervent, Flying Peggy, Southern Wrack and Sunjov. Recast stopped badly and Fervent and Flying Peggy headed her. Then Southern Wrack put in his claim, but could not catch Fervent. Recast was 15 lengths away fourth. In the second division Certainty, who broke at the start and lost about 48 yards, and Monaco had the finish to themselves, an exciting race all the way up the straight ending in Certainty winning by a neck from Monaco. Trevathan finished third 15 lengths away. Then came Silk Banner, Sturdy Travis and Two Crowns.

FLYING HANDICAP.— Boaform having her first race for several months, won the Flying Handicap without being extended. She was first out and although Colonel Rouge ran up to her across the top she had no difficulty in shaking him off and going on for a decisive win by three lengths from Fleet Street. Spanish Lad was six lengths away third. Nothing had a chance with the winner, who had handled the going well.

Phalanx galloped on the heels of another horse before the field had gone two furlongs and dislodged his rider (M. O. Hood). The jockey was not hurt.

ROSLYN TRIAL. — Platform made amends for recent defeats by winning the first division of the Roslyn Trial handicap. He got the best of the jump out, but was temporarily headed by Minton and Top Spin before the straight was reached. Once heads were straightened Platform went, on for a comfortable win although Elvena, wide out on the track, put in a good finishing run for second money. Minton went his best race to date and finished third two lengths and a-half behind Elvena. Top Spin was fourth, then came Campus and Royal Brief. Hotch Potch fell in the first furlong.

Sally Lunn made a one-horse race of the second division. She got away smartly and before three furlongs were covered she was eight or 10 lengths out in front from Amorlad, Red Feather, Gold Sequin and Melodist. She had no trouble in running home an easy winner by 10 lengths. Red Feather stayed on well and beat Gold Sequin for third place. SOUTHLAND CUP HANDICAP.— Boswell, the favourite, set the pace in the Southland Cup, but he was done with before the straight was reached and the issue was fought out between Fidelis, Strip and Heidelberg. Boswell, Aravane, Fidelis and Heidelberg were the leading division for the greater part of the race. Half a mile from home Heidelberg went up to Boswell and Aravane and before the straight was reached Aravane had dropped back and Strip and Fidelis joined issue with Heidelberg. Fidelis took the lead below the distance and held on well to win by a length from Strip, who beat Heidelberg by a similar margin. Aravane was five lengths away fourth.

NEW RIVER TROT.— Sunny Dell left the New River Trot field standing when he hit the front six furlongs from home. Along the back he was eight lengths clear of Erin’s Country, Loyal Emblem, Punctual and Brown Cloud. Two furlongs from the post Erin’s Country closed up on Sunny Dell, but he had enough in reserve and won by two lengths from Erin’s Country, with Brown Cloud five lengths away in third place. Punctual was fourth. Then followed Lunch Hour and Sea Born. STEWART ISLAND HANDICAP.— Royal Chorus, Queen Beth, Dark Colleen and Sing Sing were the leaders for most of the journey. Queen Beth was do ? with before the straight entrance where Sing Sing joined Royal Chorus, with Irish Ruler handy. Sing Sing had no difficulty in the run home and won by three lengths from Royal Chorus who beat the fast-finishing Irish Ruler for second money. Filibeg was fourth, followed by Queen Beth, Knight of Old and Dark Colleen. TRADESMEN’S HANDICAP: AngloIrish won the Tradesmen’s Handicap almost from end to end. It was an impressive performance and the winner won with a good bit in hand. Lady Don tried to go with Anglo-Irish, but failed to maintain the pace and in the run home she was beaten for second money by Bow street. Phalanx was fourth. The results were as follows. —
