HEAVY BATTLE NEAR ROSTOV
STUBBORN DEFENCE BY RUSSIANS
(United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 11.10 p.m.) LONDON, Novembei’ 21. Cold, dry weather has hardened the ground, permitting bitter fighting along the whole Eastern Front. A heavy battle is reported near Rostov, on the Don, with the Russians stubbornly defending this key city. On the south-west wing of the Moscow defences the Russians have repulsed a heavy German attack supported by 200 tanks. The Germans are still held outside Tula and no change is reported in either the Kalinin or Mojaisk sectors. The Germans still hold the initiative in the Crimea, but they have been unable to make any impression on the defences of Sebastopol. Moscow sources say that the capture of Kerch, on the other side of the peninsula, cost the Germans 20,000 killed.
