CAMP TO BE HELD AT LAKE HAYES
INVERCARGILL Y.M.C.A.
A decision to hold a camp for boys at Lake Hayes for two weeks from December 27 to January 9 was made at a meeting of directors of the Invercargill Y.M.C.A. The holiday will cost each boy £2, but the actual cost of the camp will work out at £2/5/- a boy. This will mean that the association will have to make up a deficiency of about £l5. The secretary’s report stated that tho gymnasium classes had closed at the end of the month. The final attendance figure was 417, an increase of two on the previous month. The year had been a good one for all classes. The attendance had been kept up remarkably well and increased skill had been in evidence. The younger men’s and senior girls’ classes had held a combined closing night in the form of a banquet, followed by a social and dance. Examinations for boys in first aid and Bible knowledge had been held during the month.
“The Optimists Club closed its season with a meeting. Visitors from the Y.M.C.A. board, the directors of the Rotary Club, the Ladies’ Auxiliary and previous speakers were present. Mr R. Lund spoke on the newspaper in wartime. This club has had a most successful season and the association feels sure it has a most useful future before it,” stated the report. The association had a membership for October of 510. The figure for September was 496. The Ladies’ Auxiliary had continued to cater for the Optimists’ Club and had also prepared and despatched parcels for the members of the association at present overseas in the armed forces. The report was adopted. A letter was received from LanceCorporal A. Dakin enclosing magazines from Cairo and conveying best wishes for the association.
