Fine Cast In “East Of The River”
An excellent cast plays in “East of the River,” which begins at the Majestic Theatre on Friday. Marjory Rambeau has a part particularly suited to her fine talents, that of Mama Raviola, proprietress of an East Side New York restaurant. Mama has a son of her own (John Garfield) and in the kindness of her heart she adopts another (William Lundigan). The two boys, who grow up together, go totally different ways, and it is Mama’s own son who takes the | wrong way of life, and the adopted son who turns out to be fine, studious and honourable. The more reckless youth finally has to serve a term of imprisonment, but he persuades his girl friend (Brenda Marshall), to send letters to his mother, pretending that his absence is due to his work on an orange farm. When the girl finally meets Mama Raviola, the latter’s goodness and kindness gradually work a revolution in the
girl’s heart. Complications ensue when she falls in love with the other brother and he with her. How the salvation of
the various characters is worked out in the end is told in the gripping and exciting drama.
