MARYLAND SHOOTS DOWN MESSERSCHMITT

(8.0.W.) RUGBY, November 18. The fate of a Messerschmitt 109 which attacked a flight of American-built Maryland bombers returning from a raid on Cyrenaica is described by the Air - Ministry News Service. Coming down against the sun the German aircraft raked the flight with cannon and machine-guns and then singled out one Maryland for attack. The German pilot got so close in behind that the streams of bullets from his aircraft were meeting in front of the Maryland as it put its nose down to gain speed. Suddenly a sharp burst of fire came from the Maryland and the Messerschmitt began a crazy spiral downwards until it hit the sea. Flying over Gambut recently in relays, naval aircraft dropped sticks of bombs right among enemy aircraft at a dispersal point, setting two alight and probably damaging others.
