Mr R. S. Sullivan, of the Christchurch branch of the Internal Marketing Department, arrived in Invercargill last night on a business visit to the city. Mr W. G. V. Fernie, general manager of the Calder Mackay Company Ltd., is at present visiting Invercargill. Mr R. A. Fernandez, registrar of the Social Security Department, Invercargill, has resumed work after his annual leave.

Mr C. R. Edmond, general secretary of the New Zealand Motor Trade Federation, who is on a tour of branches throughout New Zealand, will be in Invercargill next Tuesday and in the evening will address members of the local association. ’

Squadron Leader W. H. Shepherd, of Dunedin, divisional commander in the South Island of the Air Training Corps, R.N.Z.A.F., is arranging for the establishment of a unit of the corps in Invercargill. He expects to leave for Timaru on Saturday.

Mr Harry Strachan, of Sydney, representative of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for “Gone With the Wind,” arrived in Invercargill by the express last night. “Gone With the Wind” will begin screening in Invercargill on November 28. Mr T. N. Mitchell, formerly manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Winton, has been promoted to the rank of temporary major and appointed deputy group director of Group 9A, Hokitika Battalion of the Home Guard. Advice has been received that Sergeant Pilot R. C. Buchanan, who was a cadet in the city engineer’s office, has been promoted to the rdnk of pilot officer in the Royal Air Force. He is attached to a bomber squadron. PilotOfficer Buchanan was born in Mataura and is a former student of the Southland Technical College. News has been received by relations in Dunedin of the outstanding success in recent naval examinations in England of Mr James A. Pollock, N.Z.D.R.N., who passed out top of his class with 95 per cent, in the theory examination of the special branch. There were 10 New Zealanders and 17 Englishmen in the class, and New Zealanders filled the first three places. Mr Pollock was an undergraduate of the University of Otago, then of Canterbury College, and later of Auckland University College. He is the younger son of Mrs Pollock and the late Mr Robert Pollock, of Invercargill, and is now serving in the special branch in the Battle of the Atlantic.
