CHILDREN FOR HEALTH CAMP

PREPARATIONS FOR RECEPTION

(Special) DUNEDIN, Nov. 18 Exactly three weeks after the Roxburgh Health Camp was declared open the first 50 children to enter it will, on November 27, begin a stay at the new institution, which should prove of great benefit to them. The staff of the new camp is already in residence and preparations are being made for the reception of the children at the end of the month. The 50 children, who have been selected from homes in Otago and Southland, are suffering from various conditions of ill-health. Many are underweight, some are suffering from debility after illness or convalescing after a serious operation, and others again are the victims of chest complaints or heart troubles. In the ideal climate of Roxburgh they will be given special health treatment which could not be provided in their own homes. The children are not cases for hospitals or sanatoria, but they require treatment for which the new health camp is specially suited. Their stay in the camp will depend on the seriousness of their condition and on the response to treatment, but they will remain at Roxburgh for at least two months. The children have been selected from all types of homes in the two provinces and the financial circumstances of the parents have not been considered. The chief factor in the selection procedure has been consideration of children who required special treatment the most. The whole camp will be in complete readiness for the children’s arrival and the school, with its openair class rooms, will be in operation at the end of the month. While provision has been made for the accommodation of another 50 children during the summer vacation, no additional children will be taken this year.
