TRANSPORT CONTROL IN EMERGENCY

VEHICLES BEING SELECTED

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, November 18. The Minister of Transport, the Hon. R. Semple, said today that the Controller of Emergency Transport, Mr G. L. Laurenson, recently visited each district controller. With the aid of expert local committees district controllers were now proceeding with the work of selecting vehicles for the emergency requirements of the Army. The Minister added that vehicles would be taken over by the military authorities only in case of extreme emergency. Until such event occurred they would continue to be used for such civil purposes as their owner desired. Every endeavour would be made in the selection to avoid dislocation and minimize hardship. Although the right of appeal existed, he invited owners, in the interests of their country’s defence, to make the least possible use of this procedure. Mr Semple said all the district motorvehicle controllers for Otago and Southland were now appointed. They are: Dunedin, Mr W. J. Winefield; Oamaru, Mr D. E. Neave; Balclutha, Mr J. W. Wilson; Gore, Mr T. Keating; Invercargill, Mr G. Hewton; Alexandra, Mr J. W. McKellar.
