OBITUARY

MR J. C. WATSON

(Rec. 10.55 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 18. The death has occurred of Mr John Christian Watson, the first Labour Prime Minister of Australia. He was pioneer in the trade union movement in Australia. He spent his youth in New Zealand, where he became a compositor, eventually settling in Sydney. The House of Representatives in Canberra suspended its sitting this afternoon out of respect to his memory. Mr Watson, who was born in Valparaiso (Chile) came to New Zealand as a child and was educated at the Oamaru Public School. He retired from the Federal Parliament in 1910. In later years he was a director of several companies.
