Dr V. E. Galway, Dunedin City organist, arrived in Invercargill by last night’s express. He will present a i musical recital in St. John’s Anglican I Church this evening. | The Dean of Dunedin, the Very Rev. j G. C. Cruickshank, who has been visitj ing Invercargill for the eightieth ani niversary celebrations of the Anglican Church as a corporate body in SouthI land, returned to Dunedin yesterday. Dr A. Kidd, of Waipiata, is at present visitin’ Invercargill. Squadron-Leader W. H. Shepherd, Dunedin, arrived in Invercargill by last night’s express. Senior-Sergeant W. T. Kelly has returned to Invercargill from Dunedin. ;He resumed duty yesterday after his annual leave. Mr Charles Martin will leave Invercargill by the express this morning for Dunedin, where his mother is gravely ill. Mr Lloyd Powell, the distinguished English pianist, and examiner foi’ the Royal Schools of Music, will arrive in Invercargill next week to conduct examinations. Mr Powell has accepted an invitation by the Music Section of | the University Association of Southland [ to give a recital in Invercargill. Captain T. A. S. McKenzie and Lieutenant T. Roberts, of the headquarters staff at Christchurch, who have been in Invercargill for the last few days, left for the north by yesterday’s midday express. Mr J. S. Orr, who has been acting stationmaster at Bluff during the absence of Mr J. Curran on holidays, will return to Invercargill today. Advice has been received by Mrs H. Newton, Bluff, that her brother, Driver J. R. Drake, reported missing five months ago, is now a prisoner of war at Stalag VIII B, Germany. Corporal E. W. Frame, son of Mr and Mrs E. Frame, Wyndham, who has been invalided home from Suva, is now undergoing treatment in Kew Hospital. Mr J. A. McAlister, of Invercargill, has secured a sectional pass in the September examination conducted by the Australasian Institute of Secretaries.
Private advice has been received by Mr and Mrs A. Stewart, Winton, that their son, Pilot Officer Eric Stewart, has been promoted to the rank of flying officer. Flying Officer A. T. Stewart, who has been awarded the D.F.C., is a son of Mr and Mrs R. Stewart, Waihola. He was educated at John McGlashan College, Dunedin, and joined the staff of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd. In 1939 he qualified as a pilot officer in New Zealand and left to take up a commission in the R.A.F. He has for the past nine months been with a bomber squadron in the Middle East.
