HUGE TOTALIZATOR RETURNS

NEW ZEALAND CUP WEEK BETTING Although the totalizator investments on New Zealand Cup day showed a decrease as compared with Cup day in 1940 of £9345/10/-, at the end of seven days they showed an increase of £25,444, equal to just under 6 per cent, on last year’s turnover. The comparison for the seven days, with last year’s figures, are: —

Grand Totals £484,0061 £458,5621 Based on the attendance figures obtainable from the three days’ trotting at Addington, the investments recorded on that course averaged a ten shilling ticket on each race by each person present, and no doubt the average would be about the same at Riccarton, comments The Evening Star, Dunedin. Naturally the totalizator returns were the subject of much controversy during the week in Christchurch, and the following two letters, which appeared in The Press on Friday and Saturday respectively, show how this form of gambling may be misconstrued: — “STAGGERING” “The figures quoted in The Press this morning on the totalizator takings of £76,668 invested at the trotting meeting of Tuesday are simply staggering, compared with the £lBl deposited in war savings. It seems that a great many people have failed to develop a war sense and prefer to carry on with racing nonsense. I suppose as long as we think we are on the winning side everything is just all right, but should the tables be turned no doubt there would be much squealing. Probably the high figure invested on the totalizator on Tuesday points to confidence in the result of the war, but a great man warns us. ‘Let there be no slackening of our war effort,’ and here we are indulging in the high tide of a week’s racing instead of keeping our noses to the grindstone. Really, Ido think many of us have still a lot to learn. —Yours, etc., Norton Wright.” “It is unfortunate that some wellmeaning people continue to misrepresent facts when criticizing the racing public. Mr Norton Wright, in his letter, commences by stating that the totalizator takings of £76,668 are simply staggering compared with £lBl deposited in wai - savings. This is the usual illusion. The £76,668 was not the totalizator takings; it was the turnover, and actually represented about £16,000 or less invested by the public, out of which the Government received about £4OOO for Dominion purposes. The staggering fact is that some 19,000 people contributed about £4OOO to the Government’s needs, while the 100,000 people or so, who were not present, as represented by Mr Norton Wright, contributed £lBl. Mr Norton Wright declaims: ‘Let there be no slackening of our war efforts,’ and concludes with: ‘Really, I do think many of us have still a lot to learn.’ May I suggest that your correspondent takes those two points to heart. —Yours, etc., H. F. Nicoll.”

The direct taxation received by the Government on the turnover for the seven days will amount to £45,926/5/3.
