APPRENTICE JOCKEY’S SUSPENSION INCREASE TO ONE YEAR (P.A.) WELLINGTON, November 14. The judges of the New Zealand Racing Conference on an appeal by E. V. Dye, apprentice jockey, against the decision of the Wanganui District Committee in dismissing his appeal against the decision of the judicial committee of the Waverley Racing Club in suspending his apprentice jockey’s licence for a period of six months as from October 27, 1941, state that “on the hearing of this appeal we have had before us reports of the proceedings before the judicial committee of the Waverley Racing Club and before the Wanganui District Committee. We have also heard further evidence tendered on behalf of the appellant and we have reheard the evidence of T. W. Read, who immediately after the race complained to the deputy stipendiary steward. We have also heard counsel for the appellant.

“We consider that the evidence given by Read can be relied on fully and that evidence given especially by Dye, that Ring Chief stumbled three times during the race, is not borne out and that that fact justifies us in disregarding his evidence. We accept therefore as being true the evidence of Read about Dye’s foul riding. We consider that the judicial committee of the Waverley Racing Club was fully justified in its finding and that the Wanganui District Committee erred in finding the charge of foul riding not proved. We are of the opinion, however, that the penalty imposed by the Waverley judicial committee and confirmed by the Wanganui District Committee on the lesser charge was, in view of the seriousness of the offences, inadequate. We therefore dismiss the appeal and order that the term of suspension be increased from six months to 12 months from October 27, 1941. The deposit is ordered to be forfeited.’’
