Training Achievements
B. Burgess was not the first trainer to have the first and second horse in the New Zealand Cup. J. W. Lowe had a similar record in 1917, when Menelaus beat Johnny Walker, the pair being owned in partnership by Messrs V. and E. Riddiford. The two geldings were both by Martian, whose progeny filled all the places, as Snub was third. Martian had a wonderful record in the New Zealand Cup, with six winners (including a dead-heat) in eight years.
