WYNDHAM

TOWN BOARD MEETING

Cr L. Harper presided at the monthly meeting of the Wyndham Town Board. It was decided to purchase a stretcher for use in case of an emergency in the town. The chairman reported that with one exception all arrears of rates had now been paid. It was decided to grant the Plunket Society the usual rebate of all rates owing on the society’s rest room in Balaclava street. The chairman reported that the cost of concreting the footpath from the school to the railway crossing in Alma street was £6O/16/2, which would be shared equally between the board and the Wyndham Racing and Trotting Clubs. The Works Committee was authorized to proceed with the request from Messrs A. Stewart and E. Burgess to have the footpath in front of their residences in Redan street concreted the full width, the expense to be born by the applicants.

The chairman tabled a list showing the revenue of the reserve as £3Ol and the expenditure as £276/1/3, leaving a credit of just on £25 for improvements. As the hockey and cricket clubs were now not functioning their revenue would be decreased by some £4, but as it was not lawful for them to accumulate funds, and as they had liberally assisted seve.al clubs in the past, he thought with careful management they could carry on as at present. A letter from the Winton Borough Council concerning the high prices charged country centres for electricity in Southland was read. It stated that the Winton borough was desirious of ascertaining from neighbouring boroughs and counties if they would be in favour of approaching the Government for a reduction in the charges for electricity. The charge for electricity in the Gore and Mataura boroughs was Id a unit and in Invercargill the charge was 2Jd for the first 40 units and Id a unit thereafter, with a fixed rate of 3Jd a 100 square feet in respect of floor space, while the rest of Southland was charged at the rate of 6d a unit for the first 44 units and 2£d a unit for the next 200 units. The council felt that if representations were made to the Government a reduction either in the charge a unit or in the number of unts to be used before the cheap rate was reached might be granted.

The letter stated that an Invercargill resident would pay 18/5 for 106 units while the charge for the same number of units to othei- than Gore or Mataura would be £l/14/11, a difference of 16/5.
