WHALER SERIOUSLY INJURED

STRUCK BY RECOIL OF GUN (P.A.) WHANGAREI, November 5. Struck by the recoil of a harpoon gun as it was discharged at the first whale of the season, Sydney Irving, of Russell, was seriously injured this morning. Two launches from Whangamumu whaling station were chasing a whale off Cape Brett. The harpoon gun on one launch was fired and the shock tore the gun from the mounting and knocked Irving, the gunner, into the water. The gun also went over the side and was lost. Irving was rescued and brought into Russell in a serious condition with chest injuries.
