ISLAY DOWNS WINS AT GORE

PHALANX SPRINGS SURPRISE GOOD PERFORMANCE BY ROYAL CHORUS . T —‘ Clear-cut decisions marked.the suecesses of almost all of the winners' at the Gore Racing Club’s spring meeting, which was opened in fairly good conditions on Saturday afternoon. Several of the events were won by big margins, but in spite of that the racing was full of interest. The track was affected by the heavy rain of Saturday morning, but after the first few races it dried up considerably and the going, though dead, was not very heavy for the remainder of the programme. The attendance was good, and little below that of the opening day last year when £534/8/- was taken at the gates. On Saturday the takings totalled £527 16/-. The totalizator returns showed an increase. On Saturday they amounted to £20,071 and last year they were £18,858, the increase this year being £1213.

The only incident to mar a good day’s racing was the failure of J. J. L. Strathern, rider of Secret Flight who finished third in the Flying Handicap, to weigh-in after the race. That remissness cost supporters of Secret Flight more than £260, as Secret Flight was disqualified and Nightcalm was placed third. Strathern was suspended for one month.

MANDEVILLE HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP.—Norse, winner of the Mandeville Highweight Handicap, was not well placed over the first half-mile but a good run around the turn for home enabled him to get in a handy position behind the leaders into the straight. Batsham and Mae West, who took the lead from Anglo-French going along the back, held the lead to the straight, but both faded in the run home. Batsham finished fourth behind Bow Street, who was always in the picture and finished on well.

Rosaleen Dhu had every chance, as did Sir Hugh, Mosgiel and AngloFrench. Mae West stopped badly when in a good position inside the distance. Nothing had a chance with the winner over the last half-mile.

GORDON HACK HANDICAP. Royal Chorus got smartly away in the Gordon Hack Handicap and, racing clear of the field, he was never headed. It was a good performance. Southern Wave was badly left at the barrier rise and Desert Maid missed the jump out. Royal Chorus began smartly and led Lady Don and Queen Beth along the back with Kohara and Desert Maid handy. Southern Wave made up ground across the top, but Royal Chorus cantered away from the field and coasted home by five lengths from Queen Beth and Feather Boa. The last-named finished strongly and headed Desert Maid, who raced disappointingly, and Lady Don. WAIKAKA HANDICAP.— IsIay Downs made a one-horse race of the Waikaka Handicap which lost some of its interest because of the withdrawal of Night Pal, Southern Sail and Nightcalm. Silver Streak was the first to show, out after playing up at the barrier, but at the end of a furlong Islay Downs had gone to the front with Silver Streak in second place. Then followed Aravane, Fidelis, Doubleack and Mungatoon. Doubleack made a run along the back and ran into second place, but Islay Downs opened up a big gap and led into the straight three lengths in front of Doubleack. The latter made a bid at the distance and got to within a length of the leader, but in the run home Islay Downs went away and won easily by three lengths from Doubleack. Aravane was third two lengths away; then came Fidelis and Mungatoon, and Silver Streak a long way back last.

BALFOUR TROT.— Seaborn won the Balfour Trot easing up by 12 lengths from Bright Lass and Count Fbsco. Bright Lass held the lead for more than a mile and across the top on the run for home she was going easily in front of Flying Peggy, Courtcard, Seaborn and Count Fosco. Before the straight was entered however she was headed by Seaborn, who had no trouble in going away from the field. Courtcard, a pronounced ’ favourite, flattered his backers two furlongs from home but then stopped badly and finished eighth after being third, on the turn into the straight. Count Fosco hung for third place, but beyond the performance of the winner the finish of the others was poor. Sunjoy broke up at the start. Comeaway finished after the placed horses; then came Flying Peggy, Seamax and Egotist. Seamax trotted well for about a mile.

NOVICE HANDICAP.— Sing Sing, a three-year-old filly by Salmagundi from Shelter, owned by Mr J. J. Woods, president of the Birchwood Hunt Club, and trained at Riverton by A. McKay, won the Novice Handicap full of running. She was well placed early and at the half-mile was running up close to the leaders in fourth place. Once into the straight Sing Sing cut down the leaders, Platform and Dark Colleen, and won with a bit to spare by a length and a-half from Platform, with Dark Colleen two lengths away third. Then came Minton,' who got away well and raced above expectations, Red Feather, Gold Sequin, Irish Ruler and Princess Gainsborough. Dark Colleen, a well-backed fancy, had every chance after making a run up to the leading position with Platform, but she stopped badly in the race when Sing Sing challenged. Platform was always in the picture. He was one of the first away and htmg on well. Lake Mist showed uf> in the early stages.

FLYING HANDICAP.—A run on the rails inside the distance enabled Phalanx to get up and win the Flying Handicap by a short length from Fleet Street, who led almost from end to end. Phalanx was not well placed in the early stages, but he got a run on the rails approaching the straight and made up ground. The order into the' straight was Fleet Street from Secret Flight and Phalanx, with Colonel Rouge and Withdrawal handy.- Fleet Street weakened when challenged by Phalanx, but hung on to beat Secret Flight for second money. Nightcalm was fourth and Withdrawal fifth.

Lord Nuffield got away badly and raced behind the field all the way. .Secret Flight raced well for her first appearance this season, but Colonel Rouge did not live up to his track work. He was not dangerous. Withdrawal, the favourite, was up with the leaders all the way but failed to finish on. When Strathern, rider of Secret Flight, failed to weigh in, Nightcalm was placed third. OTAMA TROT.— Jackie Coogen failed to go away at the start of the Otama Trot and Fransol tangled and was slow to find her feet. The winner, Dewey’s Last, paced evenly throughout and after half a mile had been covered was up with his field. He raced around’ the field across the top on the home run and although driven right out he scored a comfortable win by three lengths from Mirage, who finished half a length

in front of Fransol. The last-named put up a good showing after settling down and promises to be hard to beat in her races today. Trevathan, Burnham and Mirage were the early leaders. They ran in that order until the last half-mile where Peter Young, Fransol and Dewey’s Last ran up to them. Mirage paced free-legged and stayed on, but Trevathan faded right out in the straight. CHARLTON HACK HANDICAP.— Anglo-Irish and Sir Denis caused the start of the Charlton Hack Handicap to be delayed several minutes and when the field was sent away Sir Denis was left.

Atua Rere and Kohara were the first to show out, but when the field had gone about a furlong and a-half Lady Adin was rushed to the front from Kohara, Milton Abbas and Brightform, with Great Swoop, Pink Bond and The Joker also prominent. Anglo-Irish was well back at this stage. Lady Adin cleared out along the back, but Kohara went after her and at the half-mile these two were well clear of Brightform, Milton Abbas and Great Swoop. Anglo-Irish made a run around the top turn and foljowed Lady Adin (a length clear of Kohara), Kohara, Brightform and Milton Abbas into the straight. Lady Adin stopped when challenged and Kohara went on for an easy win from Brightform who stalled off a strong challenge by Anglo-Irish. Milton Abbas was fourth, and then came Lady Adin, Great Swoop, The Joker and Pink Bond. The results were as follows:— MANDEVILLE HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP, £l5O. Eight and a-half furlongs. 1- G. H.
