CRITICAL POSITION IN DONETZ BASIN
ENEMY GAINING GROUND STRONG RUSSIAN RESISTANCE AT MOSCOW (United Press Association —Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, October 26. Today, which marks the start of the nineteenth week of the war in Russia, finds the Russians still standing firm at the approaches to Moscow. The Germans have made little progress towards the city in the last 24 hours. However, in the Donetz Basin the enemy is slowly gaining ground and Moscow admits that the situation in this region is critical. The Germans claim to have captured Kharkov, the great industrial capital of the Eastern Ukraine, but there is no confirmation of this from Moscow. The Germans say that Kharkov was taken after a two-day air blitz which reduced the city to flames. A Russian communique states that a great battle is raging on the Perekop Isthmus. German and Rumanian troops have been strongly reinforced and the Russians arc being subjected to heavy pressure.
