Miss Nancy Gilkison, Grey street, leaves today for a visit to Garston. Mrs E. Sinclair, Morton street, left yesterday on a visit to Dunedin. Mr and Mrs C. W. Francis, Filleul street, are visiting Wellington. Miss Monica Lynch, Nith street, left yesterday for a week-end visit to Dunedin. Mrs T. Lynch and Miss Clare Lynch, Clyde street, are spending the week-end in Timaru. Mrs J. C. Kirkland, Kelvin road, and Mrs W. McKitterick, Gala street, are spending the week-end in Dunedin. Miss Molly Wills, Mitchell street, is the guest of her aunt, Mrs J. A. Mackay, Timaru. Mrs F. Wallis, Gore, was a guest at the Canterbury Travel Club on Wednesday morning.

Miss Molly Macalister, Dalrymple street,, and Miss Monica Ford, Ettrick street, leave today on a short visit to Roxburgh, Miss Betty Cameron, Ravensbourne, Dunedin, arrives tonight to spend a holiday as the guest of Miss Jean Cockerell, Newcastle street. Miss Noeline Laker, who recently returned from the North Island, and has been staying at the Grand Hotel, left for her home at Stewart Island yesterday. The Music Circle of the Southland Women’s Club will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday at 8 p.m. A short musical programme, featuring the English composer Edward Elgar, will be presented. A social afternoon was held in the Southland Women’s Club yesterday, the guest speaker being Mr Dudley Wills, who gave an interesting talk on the older parts of London. Mrs B. W. Hewat thanked Mr Wills on behalf of the club members present.

RED CROSS NEWS .COMMITTEE REPORTS Voluntary Aid Lectures—Members of the hygiene and sanitation class will meet in the room at the U.F.S. Hall, Tay street, on Tuesday at .7.30 p.m. Members of the home nursing class will meet in the room at the U.F.S. Hall, Tay street, on Wednesday, at 7 p.m. Members of the transport section should be at Vickery’s Garage on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The society acknowledges with thanks the following gifts from, the staff of Lorneville Hotel, £4; Waimatuku subcentre, £2O; “Gladstone Friends,” £1 5/-; Otautau sub-centre, £10; central committee, 13/3; balance sale of victory badges. Next week the members of the Central Committee will be in charge of the depot. Goods have been received from Mrs G. B. Somerville, Pine Bush, and a parcel from Waimahaka branch. Waikiwi Committee—The members of the sewing guild will meet on Thursday at the residence of Mrs A. Fraser, North road, at 2.15 p.m. Avenal-Northend Committee.—All work in hand has been completed. The winner of the dinner competition held recently was Miss Flegg, c/o Brown’s pharmacy, Dee street, Invercargill. South Invercargill—On Thursday afternoon the garden party arranged by Mrs John Thomson, Grace street, proved most successful . despite the weather. The sum of £l3/13/4 was the result of the effort. Winners of competitions were: Silk stockings, Mrs Myron, 253 Herbert street; bowl of tulips, Mrs G. Fredric, cake, Mrs P. E. Hazeldine. North Invercargill.—The members of the sewing guild will meet on Tuesday, in the public hall, North Invercargill, at 2.30 p.m. Joint Council of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society.— During the week a consignment of 19 dressing gowns was forwarded to Wellington for despatch overseas, also a consignment of 96 pairs of pyjamas. Hospital Visitation: The members of the committee who undertake this work, report that the soldiers are appreciating this part of the organization’s activities. Prisoners of War Department: The secretary of this department reports that 50 next of kin have recently visited the office for information and advice. This office is situated above the New Zealand Red Cross Headquarters, in Esk street.

M. Gillanders, Newcastle street, leave today on a visit to the Eglinton Valley. Miss Jean Scandrett, Miss Nancy Basstian and Mrs George Ross are spending a few days at The Rocks, Riverton. Miss Joyce Gulliver, Christchurch, arrives today to spend the week-end with her parents, Mr and Mrs A. T. Gulliver, Kelvin street. Miss Eileen Semmens, Conon street, is spending a holiday with Mrs Frank Herbert, Heriot, before leaving to take up a position in Wellington. Mesdames Eric McCauley (Lumsden) and Alex Patterson (Mossburn), Misses Myrtle Patterson and Maud Patterson (Mararoa Station), are spending the week-end at Stewart Island.

WOMEN’S PATRIOTIC WORK PACKING FOR OVERSEAS Waikiwi.—The monthly meeting will be’ held on Tuesday afternoon next at the home of Mrs Acton. The collectors will be calling during next week. A “beetle” evening will be held by the junior patriotic committee on Tuesday evening in the St. Stephen’s Sunday school hall. All interested are invited to be present. The Lady Galway Guild has again begun packing for the next consignment overseas. There are two cases from Winton, 18 cases from Gore are on hand and several country committees have sent in parcels recently—special mention being made of some very dainty knitted goods from Wyndham Patriotic Committee. SUB-COMMITTEE NOTES The main work of the sub-committees has been attendance at the display of New Zealand art in the lounge of H. and J. Smith’s tea rooms. One sale has already been effected. The work of packing parcels for overseas has re- . commenced. Central.—The monthly collection is still in progress. East Invercargill.—This committee has supplied helpers at the depot, during the past week. Georgetown.—This committee will be on duty at the depot next week. South Invercargill B.—This commit- | tee is still engaged on its monthly j house-to-house collection. Gladstone.—The monthly collection for October amounted to £29/11/9. Thanks are extended to all who gave to collectors. AIR FORCE RELATIONS The Air Force Relations Committee wishes to acknowledge with thanks donations of garments from the following: Mesdames H. J. Macalister, Browning, Stirling, T. Barr, Misses | Riley and P. Taylor, the Woodlands Patriotic Committee and the Limehills Patriotic Committee. The pupils of St. John’s Girls’ School have undertaken to knit a number of garments. The Air Force Relations headquarters, Wellington, sent a receipt for the following goods received in good condition: 23 pullovers, 5 longsleeved pullovers, 21 pairs of socks, 2 pairs of gloves, 2 pairs of mittens, 20 balaclavas and 32 scarves. WOMEN’S AUXILIARY NOTES An important parade of members will be held at the Drill Hall on Thursday, October 30, at 6.45 p.m. All members must attend this parade.
