■WELLINGTON SPRING MEETING STEEPLECHASE WON BY CONFLAGRATION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 23. The spring meeting of the Wellington Racing Club opened at Trentham today in fine weather with a fresh, cold westerly wind. The going was soft and although it improved during the day it was always slow. There was a large attendance and the totalizator handled £59,055, an increase of £8489 on the first day last year. During the running of the Shorts Handicap, Enrich, ridden by H. N. Wiggins, got on the heels of another runner entering the straight and threw the rider and kicked him as he went past. The track soon became heavy and fast times were not registered. Secret Flight continues to make good progress. Irish Ruler headed Sir Denis and Black Bard over half a mile in the smart time of 51 l-ssec, the first two furlongs taking 25sec. Filibeg and Melodist ran half a mile in 54sec, and Platform was too good for Knight of Old and Bantas over six furlongs in lmin 23sec. Platform is not quite over his cold and although he shaped well he was stopping at the finish. Bow Street and Fleet Street were given a couple of sprints over two furlongs and several other horses were given easy tasks.
