OTAUTAU

SCHOOL COMMITTEE At the monthly meeting of the Otautau School Committee the head master reported that the previous term ended with a roll number of 183, the average attendance being 163. This term began with a roll of 185, there being five admissions and three withdrawals. During last term the pupils had raised £l7 for patriotic purposes by class collections, the sale of bottles, firewood, pea stakes and so on, and their efforts were to be commended. Appreciative reference was made by the members of the work of the pupils in raising such a sum for the soldiers’ parcels New Year fund, and they were accorded a vote of thanks. Mr Paterson reported that the profit on the cards this season was £7/3/-, and the chairman stated that the school concert would be held on December 17. A letter was received from the secretary of the Southland Education. Board notifying that a subsidy of £2/0/9 would be paid on the grant of £5 made by the Otautau Committee for the. purl chase of books for the school library. The chairman reported that he had received advice from the Education Board member that a tender had been forwarded to Wellington for the erection of conveniences and this was approved, less an amount of £42. The board was agreeable to proceed with this work if the committee would refund one-third of this amount. It was decided to agree to do this provided the tender was approved, and the work proceeded with during this financial year, preferably during the school holidays. METHODIST CHURCH The Rev. G. B. Hinton, Invercargill, presided over representatives from Otautau and Aparima at the quarterly meeting of the Otautau Methodist Church. The financial position was reported to be. satisfactory, Reference was

made to the good work being done by the Rev. W. J. Bryant, and it was decided to extend an invitation to him to remain another year. Mr W.
