GERMAN ADVANCE ON MOSCOW IS SLOWER
RUSSIANS EVACUATE BRYANSK
INTENSE FIGHTING AT VIAZMA
(United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.10 a.m.) LONDON, October 13.
There is evidence that the German drive on Moscow has slowed down, although fierce fighting continues along the sector. It is not known whether the speed of the German advance has been checked because of mechanical trouble, sterner Russian resistance or the necessity of clearing up pockets of Russian resistance, but it is stated in London that if the Germans have to eliminate centres of resistance in their rear they may be delayed for three weeks. It is officially announced in Moscow that the Russians have withdrawn from Bryansk after inflicting heavy losses on the Germans. Marshal Timoshenko, Commander-in-Chief in the Central Sector, has taken up new positions for the defence of Moscow, having apparently defeated the attempts of the Germans to encircle his armies. The fighting at Viazma has grown more intense as both sides have brought up reinforcements.
The lower claw of the German pincers movement against Moscow has penetrated to a point north of Orel, but snow is falling steadily between Orel and Tula and this may retard the advance. At some places in this region the Russians have taken the initiative, but their attacks are of only local importance.
