RAILWAY CROSSING AT RYAL BUSH

IMPROVEMENT TO GRADE OF ROAD The attitude of the Railways Department to the proposed improvement of the grade of the Ryal Bush road at the railway crossing was explained in a letter from the district engineer (Mr G. M. Beck) received at a meeting of the Southland County Council yesterday. “It is the policy of this department in cases such as this to maintain the roadway to the standard to which it was constructed, but that any improvement must be carried out by, and at the cost of, the local authority,” stated the letter. “Should an improvement of the grade or surface be made by the local authority the department will then maintain the crossing to the new grade or surface within the specified limits of distance from the centre line of the railway. In the case in point it would appeal’ that the work mentioned should therefore be done by your council, and after consolidation the department will be responsible for maintenance.” It was decided that the work be carried out by the council.
