CONDITIONS BAD IN ITALY

NEW YORK, September 17. Highly placed Americans returning to the United States from Italy paint a gloomy picture of conditions in Italy. They say that Mussolini, ill and disappointed, is reported to be living in semi-seclusion surrounded by the Gestapo. The Italian people are openly saying that they would prefer to become a British colony rather than a German colony. Italians, moreover, are keen listeners to the British Broadcasting Corporation which gives them all the news while their own stations dole out small, inspired bulletins. Food everywhere is rationed and it is almost impossible for the average peasant to purchase clothing and shoes.
