NUMBER PLATES FOR VEHICLES

NO NEW ONES DURING WAR (Special) WELLINGTON, Sept. 19. A statement that no new number plates for motor-vehicles would be issued while the war lasted was made by the Minister of Transport (the Hon. R. Semple) when the estimates of the Transport Department were being discussed in the House of Representatives today. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr b. G. Holland) suggested that a system of permanent number plates with renewable windscreen stickers to show that the vehicles had been licensed might well be adopted for all time. Mr Semple said he was inclined to think that the old system of new number plates yearly would never be reverted to.
