RUSSIAN OFFENSIVE ON CENTRAL FRONT

DRIVE TOWARDS GOMEL HEAVY FIGHTING AT LENINGRAD (United Press Association —Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.15 a.m.) LONDON, September 10. Russian troops have launched another drive in the central sector, this time towards Gomel. Although it is smaller than Marshal Simeon Timoshenko’s first attack, this offensive is already producing results. It is reported in Moscow that the 29th German Motorized Division and the staff of the 15th Motorized Regiment have been wiped out. M. Lozovsky, the Soviet spokesman, said the Russian offensive was continuing in the central sector and pointed out that the smashing of eight German divisions in this area was more than a local success. As the timefactor was so important to the Germans any set-back for them at a pivotal point was of the utmost importance. Fiercer fighting has been reported near Leningrad. The Germans are anxious to reduce the city as quickly as possible because, they say, the troops are required elsewhere before the winter. The Germans are also anxious to capture Leningrad intact because of its big stores of materials and its valuable aluminium industry, but if the siege is protracted they state they will have no hesitation in bombing it mercilessly.
