Appeals By Farmers

Practically all the appeals heard by the No. 6 Armed Forces Appeal Board at its sitting in Gore yesterday were by or on behalf of men on the land. All the appeals were on the grounds of public interest or undue hardship, or both, and many were adjourned sine die, the reservists to serve either in the Territorial Force or the Home Guard. The members of the board were Messrs J. R. Bartholomew, S.M. (chairman), J. Price and H. Hodgson. Mr A. N. Haggitt acted for the Crown. I The following appeals were adjourned sine die and the reservist in each case directed to serve or to continue to serve in the Home Guard:—Todd Brothers Ltd. (Mr L. J. O. Arthur) for William Law Riddell, farm contractor, of Heriot, and the reservist for himself, Mrs Jane Kirk (Mr W. B. Naylor) for her son, Henry Kirk, farm worker, of Kelso; Robert Pringle, farmer, of Heriot (Mr Naylor), for himself; David Dickison Edgar, farmer, of Tapanui (Mr Naylor), for his son, David Ivon Edgar; Walter Douglas Black, farmer, of Crookston (Mr Naylor) for himself; James Douglas Dodds, farmer, of Waikoikoi (Mr Naylor) for his partner, Ivan Moore Littlejohn and the reservist for himself; Duncan C. M. Crossan, farmer, of Kelso, for an employee, James Macauley. The following appeals were adjourned sine die and the reservist in each case transferred to the Territorial Force for a period of three months:—Donald Ross, farmer, of Moa Flat, for his son, Thomas David Wilson Ross, William Ramsay, farmer, of Crookston (Mr Naylor), for his son, Harold Stanley Ramsay; John Salmond Adam, farmer, of Crookston (Mr S. D. Macdonald), for his son, Gordon Adam; James Logan, farmer, of Otama (Mr Macdonald) for his brother, Thomas Andrew Logan; Thomas Mclntosh Crossan, farmer, of Kelso (Mr Arthur), for his son, George Duncan Crossan.

An appeal by James Simpson, farmer, of Kelso (Mr Naylor) for himself was adjourned sine die. An extension of time until the end of November was sought by Mrs Margaret Elizabeth Curry, of Kelso (Mr G. R. Martin), who appealed for her son, William Curry. The appeal was dismissed with the condition that the reservist should not be called up before November 30.

The Director of National Service appealed for Raymond Seaforth McKenzie, farmer, of Heriot. Mr Arthur appeared for the father, Donald Seaforth McKenzie. An extension of time was granted to January 31. APPEAL DISMISSED An appeal by the Director of National Service for Edward Donald Dray, farm worker, of Mokoreta (Mr Macdonald) was dismissed with the condition that the reservist be not called up before November 30. Mr Macdonald appeared for Andrew Reid, a farmer, of Conical Hills, who appealed on behalf of his son, John Dawson Reid. The Director of National Service entered an appeal for the reservist’s brother, Ernest Andrew Reid. Both appeals were adjourned to the next sitting at Gore. John Aline Robert Miller, transport operator in the Gore-Mandeville district (Mr H. L. Smith), appealed on his own behalf. The appeal was dismissed, the reservist not to be called up before December 31. Dugald Graham, plumber, of Tapanui, who appealed for himself, sought an extension of time to enable him to sell his business. The appeal was dismissed with the condition that the reservist be not called up before November 30. An appeal by Thomas Wilkins Hickey, farmer’ and bee-keeper of Dunrobin (Mr Arthur) was dismissed, the reservist not to be called up before November 30.
