OBITUARY

MONSIGNOR MORKANE DUNEDIN, September 5. The death occurred at Bishop’s House tonight of the Right Rev. Monsignor Cecil Morkane, D.D., M.A., at the age of 60 years. Although he had not enjoyed good health for some years his death came as a surprise to his most Ultimate friends. Born at Port Chalmers in 1881, Monsignor Morkane was educated in Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington and Sydney. He was ordained in Rome in 1907 and in 1910 he was appointed to the professorial staff of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, the association lasting nearly a quarter of a century. He became rector in 1920. The degree of Doctor of Divinity was conferred on Monsignor Morkane in 1925. He again visited Rome in 1934, being created a domestic prelate by the Pope. On his return he was appointed administrator of St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Dunedin. He made a health visit to Rome in 1939, returning shortly before the outbreak of war and since then his health had gradually failed.-
