ATTACK BY SUBMARINE

U.S. DESTROYER OFF ICELAND VESSEL TAKES ACTION (Rec. 12.15 a.m.) WASHINGTON, September 5. The United States destroyer Greer was attacked by a submarine, which fired torpedoes, off Iceland, but the destroyer was not damaged, according to an announcement by the Navy. The Greer immediately counterattacked, dropping depth charges. The result is not known. The Navy Department said the Greer was en route to Iceland with mail. The incident has caused a big stir throughout the country. The New York Times says America will soon have to face the question of a “shooting” war. Reliable sources say that within three months Congress will be asked to amend the Neutrality Act to allow American ships to enter - the war zones.

The Greer is one of the 153 flush-deck destroyers built for the United States towards the close of the last war, 50 of which were transferred to Britain more than a year ago. Built by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation at Squantam, she was laid down on June 3, 1918, launched on November 2 and completed on May 5, 1919. She is armed with four 4-inch guns and one 3-inch anti-aircraft gun. She has 12 21-inch torpedo tubes. Her speed is about 35 knots.
