CAPTURE BY FORCE MAY NOT BE ATTEMPTED
KRONSTADT NAVAL BASE BOMBED (United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.10 a.m.) LONDON, September 5. The Germans now say that they may not try to capture either Leningrad or Odessa by force. They say that they may refuse to make short work of Leningrad, like Warsaw and Rotterdam, as the city may be useful to them later, while Odessa, they claim, has been so knocked about by German bombers and Russian demolition experts that it is no longer worth a battle. The latest Russian reports show that the Germans have been roughly handled in front of Leningrad. Russian official circles deny that Leningrad is isolated and say that railway communication between the city and Moscow is not impaired. German planes have launched furious bombing attacks on the naval base of Kronstadt, but they have suffered heavily at the hands of the Red Air Force and Kronstadt’s anti-aircraft defences. The Russians claim that the 263rd German Division has been destroyed.
