“CONTRABAND” FOR REGENT
EXCITING STORY OF THE WAR “Contraband,” which comes to the Regent Theatre on Saturday, is notable for its acting, for its technical excellence, and for a most exciting plot. The thrills have an authentic note which has been obtained largely through the co-operation of the British Admiralty. Conrad Veidt plays the part of Captain Andersen, skipper of the Danish ship Heloig, and Valerie Hobson is Miss Clayton, alias Mrs Sirensen, one of several mysterious passengers. The Heloig is laden with much-needed medical supplies for Denmark, and her captain is anxious to get home to Copenhagen without being stopped by the British contraband control. But he is stopped and finally accepts the delay which is courteously insisted upon by the British officers. He is invited ashore to dinner with i his chief officer, and is provided with the necessary landing passes. Both are more than a little disturbed when they find the passes have been stolen. A search shows that “Mrs Sirensen” and “Mr Pidgeon” have disappeared, taking not only the passes, but the motor-boat. The captain has already had some trouble with the beautiful lady and this last escapade is just too much. He rows ashore, and is just in time to catch the same train as Mrs Sorensen and Mr Pidgeon. In blacked-cut London, Pidgeon evades him, but he manages to keep up with the lady despite some by-play with the doubleended waiting rooms, and is’led into the exciting series of adventures which forms the main body of the story.
