RACING NOTES
FREMONT’S WIN AT ADDINGTON SPANISH LAD CHANGES HANDS The win of Fremont in the Federal Handicap at Addington on Saturday was overdue. Last season Fremont contested 20 races, and as his record shows he was one of the most consistent pacers in commission. He won two races and was placed 11 times. He has started the new season well, a third and a win being his record at the recent National meeting. Fremont has now won jifst on £3OOO in stakes and as he is still a young horse as pacers go he should add to his winnings this season. With Quest he holds the mile and a-half record of 3min 14 l-ssec at Forbury Park. Fremont is a richly-bred American horse who was imported when a two-year-old by Mr F. Wallis, of Gore. He is by Real Frisco from Fruity Worthy, the dam of Lusty Volo, and apart from his good prospects in the future on the race track he has fhe physique and breeding to gain distinction at the stud. It is noteworthy that he has a victory over Gold Bar, probably the fastest pacer in commission' in New Zealand today. Spanish Lad Spanish Lad, the Balboa-Spearmaid gelding raced by Mr H. J. Riddle, has changed hands, and in future he will race in the colours of Mr Hl G. Mason, the well-known Invercargill sportsman. Mr Mason has raced a good number of horses in Southland, among them being Cupidon, an A.J.C. Derby winner, Crubenmore, Kilfane and All Humbug. Spanish Lac is now a seven-year-old, and as he is a son of Balboa he may be expected to have some of his best years ahead of him. Two seasons ago, when
he won several good sprint handicaps, he was ranked among the foremost sprinters racing in the South Island. Among his successes were wins in the Templeton Handicap (C.J.C. Easter meeting), the Dunedin Jockey Club Publicans’ Handicap and Federal Handicap and the Flying Handicap of the Southland Racing Club. He won five races as a four-year-old. Last year Spanish Lad was started 12 times for four minor placings. His last appearance in a race was at the Dunedin Cup meeting in February. At the present time he is eating the oats of idleness. Progress at Riverton It is probable that the Riverton Racing Club will fall into line with other progressive clubs in New Zealand and provide facilities for the sale of winand place tickets at the one window for its next Easter meeting. Such a provision would meet with the full support of the investing public. With the prospect of a £lOO,OOO totalizator turnover (for three days) well in sight, the club certainly will require to move with the times. The sale of the two lots of tickets at one window will help to relieve the congestion which was most noticeable on the opening day of the last meeting, and at the same time enable more money to be handled by the totalizator staff. Otago Hunt Acceptances Acceptances for the Otago Hunt meeting at Wingatui on September 6 will close on Friday at 5 p.m. A Young Pilot A. Motz, who rode Sports Review when he won the Islington Handicap (saddle) on the last day of the Addington meeting, is 17 years old. He is a son of R. Motz, the trainer. Changes of Venue Changes of venue for the following clubs with meetings next month have been approved because of military occupation of the home courses:—Avondale to Ellerslie, Wanganui to Awapuni, and Foxton to Levin.
