JAPANESE ENVOY AND MR HULL
TALKS FEATURED IN TOKYO PRESS (Rec. 10.35 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 25. The New York Times Tokyo correspondent says the Press has concentrated on the conference between the American Secretary of State, Mr Cordell Hull, and the Japanese Ambassador to Washington, Admiral Kichisaburo Nomura, which has aroused faint hopes of the alleviation of the tension. There are various hints that both sides may be seeking to work out a formula to prevent the r r, gravation of the situation. The Tokyo correspondent of lhe New York Herald Tribune says the first criticism of Prince Fumimaro Konoye’s new administration has been published. The Hochi Shimbun mentions Prince Konoye’s wavering, unstable leadership and questions his ability to secure united national support. The Hochi Shimbun declares that Japan must unswervingly adhere to her expansionist policy, but she would be defeated unless she had a leader able to command unity. A home defence official, Colonel Nambu, warned the Tokyo public to be calm in face of rumours that the city was likely to be bombed. “We must be prepared for raids, but they are not frightful,” he added.
